Heat wave hits Japan

Heat wave hits Japan
A heat wave continues to hit most parts of Japan on Tuesday, with many cities recording the year's highest temperatures.

The Meteorological Agency said a high atmospheric pressure brought scorching heat to eastern and western Japan, where temperatures rose sharply, mainly in inland areas.

Daytime highs surpassed 35 degrees Celsius in many places across the country. Isesaki City, in the eastern prefecture of Gunma, reached 38 degrees. Maebashi City in the prefecture and Tajimi City in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, saw their highs hit 37.3 degrees. The daytime high in central Tokyo reached 34.5 degrees. The weather agency says temperatures are likely to hit around 35 degrees on Wednesday, and forecasts the hot spell to continue through the weekend. More than 120 people were rushed to hospital for heatstroke across the country on Tuesday. Among them, 3 people in their 80s died of heatstroke after working outside on farms.
