The troubled business relationship between major German automaker Volkswagen and Japan's Suzuki Motor may deteriorate further.
Volkswagen released a statement on Sunday in which it says the Japanese car maker violated its contract by agreeing to purchase diesel engines from another car maker.
The two companies formed a capital tie-up in December 2009 with the aim of jointly expanding their market shares in emerging economies and developing eco-friendly technologies.
Their alliance was stalled in July this year when Suzuki expressed its frustration by saying that the German automaker does not see their partnership as equal.
Volkswagen said that specific joint tie-ups had not progressed as much as it envisaged.
It did not say in the statement that the tie-up should end. It said Suzuki has several weeks to rectify the situation and it continues to view the Japanese car maker as an attractive investment.
However, the relationship is expected to worsen further.

The Israeli government has repatriated almost all of its diplomats from Egypt after protesters broke into its embassy in Cairo.
Hundreds of Egyptians surrounded the Israeli embassy in Cairo on Friday. The rally was in protest of the killing of 5 Egyptian soldiers last month during a gun battle between Israeli troops and militants near the border with Egypt.
The protesters destroyed a part of the wall surrounding the embassy before breaking in. Then, they crushed with security forces.
Egyptian state TV reports 3 people were killed in the incident and more then 1,000 were injured.
39 rally participants were arrested.
A senior Israeli official told NHK that the protesters had disrupted the country's diplomatic activity, and that their action damaged relations between the 2 countries.
The official said all 86 embassy staff members and their families have left the country with only one diplomat staying behind to act as a liaison.
No Israelis were injured in the unrest.
Egypt was the first Arab state to establish diplomatic ties with Israel, and is an important country for its security.
However, since the fall of the government of former president Hosni Mubarak, that have been growing calls for a shift toward a more hard line stance against Israel.
