A magnitude 6.9 earthquake has hit southern Peru.
The US Geological Survey says the quake occurred at about 2:00 PM local time on Friday, in a coastal area 50 kilometers south of the southern city of Ica. The quake's focus is estimated to be 14.8 kilometers deep.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said there is no threat of a tsunami.
A hotel clerk in Ica said the jolt lasted for about 30 seconds, but nothing fell from shelves and there was no damage to the hotel.
