Hatoyama to resign
Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has expressed his intention to step down to take responsibility for the departure of the Social Democratic Party from the coalition government.
Hatoyama conveyed his intention to executives of his Democratic Party on Wednesday morning.
He said he would take responsibility for losing public trust in the government after the SDP left the coalition over the issue of relocating a US air base in Okinawa, southern Japan.
Democratic Party lawmakers will now meet to discuss how to handle the matter.
