Google Street View Trike Captures the Roads Less Driven

googletrikeWith three wheels and a camera, Google has solved the problem of capturing images of car-free roadways for its Street View service.
The Google Trike, a tricycle with a pole-mounted camera attached to the rear, is set to debut in Genoa, Italy this spring.  “This mechanical masterpiece comprises 3 bicycle wheels, a mounted Street View camera and a specially decorated box containing image collecting gadgetry,” according to a Google press release.
According to Google, the trike “weighs nearly 18 stone!” and requires a “specially trained super fit” rider decked out in Google-branded gear. For the riders’ sakes, we hope they stay out of that ritzy British neighborhood that pitched a fit when the Street View Car drove through.
After basking in the Italian countryside, the Google Trike is headed to the UK to show off British landmarks in a partnership with tourism promoter VisitBritain. One can’t exactly drive through Stonehenge, so the Trike will be ideal. Of course, a human-powered vehicle can’t visit every historic site in one summer — let alone a wet British summer –  so VisitBritain is holding an online contestwhere folks can vote for the places the trike will visit first.
“The new trike will enable us to showcase even more of Britain’s wonderful destinations and we look forward to some great ideas from the public,” VisitBritain spokesman Justin Reid said.
Since many of these sites are privately owned, Google pledged that they’d “work closely with the relevant organizations to collect images of privately-owned locations.” And just in case the Trike catches you doing something naughty on the grounds of a Medieval castle, Google promises to “apply our face-blurring and license plate blurring to all these images to protect people’s privacy.”
