The ongoing heat wave across Japan claimed 19 lives on Saturday.
In Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo, police and fire departments announced that 13 people had died, apparently from heat stroke. Another 6 deaths were reported in Chiba, Miyagi and elsewhere.
11 people remain in serious condition, and are receiving treatment in hospital.
NHK learned that as of 7:30 PM on Saturday, 314 people had been taken to hospital in major cities across the country, apparently suffering from heat stroke. Of these, 60 cases occurred in Tokyo.
