Plastic bottle boat crosses the Pacific
A boat made of plastic bottles arrived in Sydney, Australia, on Monday from the United States after a 4-month journey across the Pacific Ocean.
The 18-meter catamaran, fashioned from 12,500 used plastic bottles, set sail from San Francisco in March.
Named the "Plastiki," it traveled nearly 15,000 kilometers, making port calls at New Caledonia and other islands.
The 6 crewmembers headed by British environmentalist David de Rothschild say they hope the journey will help raise awareness of the huge amount of pollution, particularly plastic waste, that is hurting the ocean.
Green technology, including solar panels and wind turbines, provided electricity. The crew grew vegetables in a small garden aboard the boat. Rain water was recycled into clean drinking water.
The Plastiki will be exhibited to the public in Sydney for the next month.
