People across Japan bought grilled eels on Monday, the hottest day of the year according to a traditional Japanese calendar. It is believed that eating grilled eel on this day helps people to withstand the summer heat.
At Omicho market in Kanazawa, on the Sea of Japan coast, customers lined up from the early morning to buy grilled eels. One store is selling eels for 16 to 35 dollars each.
Industry watchers feared that domestic eels might be in short supply this year, due to poor catches of eel fry.
The shop says it was able to keep the price unchanged because it stocks eels from domestic farmers who use fry imported from China.
