Five people have been confirmed dead after a helicopter crashed into a mountain in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, on Sunday.
The accident occurred in Chichibu at around 11 AM while the crew of 7 tried to rescue a group of 9 climbers who had been following a mountain stream. One of the climbers fell into a pool at the bottom of a waterfall.
Local authorities say 2 pilots, 3 rescue workers and 2 fire fighters were on board.
Police say 2 of them were found alive at the crash site, but the other 5 were confirmed dead at a hospital.
Police say the helicopter crashed while 2 fire fighters were descending on a rope to rescue the climber. They are investigating the cause of the accident.
The helicopter made by a French firm, Eurocopter, measures 14 meters by 12 meters and can carry 10 people.
