MCA says new Parliament building a waste of money

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 — MCA today disagreed with the government’s proposal to construct a new RM800 million Parliament building in Putrajaya, labelling it a “sheer waste of public funds”.

Party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said in a statement today that the government should reconsider its proposal and turn it into an optional project instead.

“There is no need for a Parliament building costing RM800mil in Putrajaya which is a sheer waste of public funds which could be better utilised for projects benefiting the rakyat.

“This is especially so when the Government is urging Malaysians to reduce expenditure to have a balanced budget,” he said in a statement.

Dr Chua pointed out that the present Parliament House which was built in 1962 should not only be preserved as a heritage building but should also be proudly occupied by all parliamentarians.

“The Parliament House built in 1962 was one of the earliest landmarks in the country and is an institution by itself,” he said.
