A tsunami caused by a powerful earthquake has hit Indonesian islands off Sumatra, killing 31 people and leaving about 160 others missing.
The magnitude 7.7 quake occurred on Monday night, with its epicenter off Sumatra.
Local disaster management authorities say a 3-meter high wave reached Mentawai islands near the epicenter just after the quake, which left 31 people dead and about 160 missing, so far.
The Australian embassy in Jakarta says a boat carrying 9 Australians and one Japanese crew member has been out of radio contact since the quake occurred.
The agent of the boat says on its website that the boat carries surfers visiting nearby islands. It says it has no means of communicating with the boat and that no details are available as to whether the boat was swallowed up by the tsunami.
The boat was expected to come back on November 1st.
