
The Kansai Electric Power Company hopes to keep its nuclear reactor in Mihama running for another 10 years. In November, it will be 40 years since the Number 1 reactor went into operation. If the authorities approve the extension, it will become the longest serving reactor in Japan.
A nuclear reactor must clear additional national safety standards if the operator hopes to continue running it beyond 40 years.
The Industry Ministry's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency has already looked into the 10 year plan and will possibly approve it.
The Kansai Electric Power Company will then present the plan to Fukui Prefecture and Mihama Town and seek their approval.
The Japan Atomic Power Company's Number 1 reactor at its Tsuruga power plant has been in service for 40 years and has been given another 6 years. It is the longest operational nuclear reactor in Japan.
