Battery-powered house to be put to practical use
A new eco-friendly house equipped with a battery that stores solar energy is to be put in practical use in Japan early next year.

Daiwa House Industry developed the house with the about-one-meter-tall battery, which can provide 15 hours' worth of power.

The house is designed to help residents reduce electricity costs and carbon dioxide emissions by storing solar energy or electricity provided at late-night discount rates.

The maker chose the lithium-ion battery for its high capacity for residential use. Such batteries are also used in personal computers and electric vehicles.

Battery-equipped houses are also being developed by major manufacturer Sekisui House and a gas company.

Daiwa House manager Yoshinori Saeki said the company's latest technology allows houses not only to generate electricity but also to store it. He said the technology is vital in realizing the company's goal of making houses that are self-sufficient in terms of electricity.

The new house is to be shown to the public from Saturday at house exhibition parks in Kasukabe City in Saitama Prefecture, near Tokyo, and Nagoya City in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan.
