Intl body to promote solar power in Asia
An international body to promote use of solar power in rapidly growing Asian economies will be established next April, most likely in Tokyo.
This was decided at a meeting in Manila on Tuesday co-sponsored by the Asian Development Bank. The new organization will be set up under the initiative of the ADB.
The new body would back the construction of large-scale solar power generation facilities and grids in India, China and other Asian countries by mediating between governments and companies, and by helping to arrange loans from banks.
Government representatives from more than 10 countries and over 300 companies, including solar battery makers, are expected to join the organization.
The Asian Development Bank plans to invest more than 9 billion dollars over the next 3 years to back the initiative.
One Japanese electronics maker welcomed the announcement, saying that support from governments and international bodies is crucial in the early stages of such a project.
