The US government continues to stop short of clearly siding with President Hosni Mubarak or anti-government protesters in Egypt.
A White House statement on Sunday said the United States supports an orderly transition to democratic government in the country.
That triggered US media speculation that the US government had switched its support from Mubarak to the opposition.
At a news conference on Monday, White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs called for meaningful negotiations with a broad cross-section of the Egyptian people, including opposition groups.
Asked if an orderly transition meant the US government would no longer support Mubarak, Gibbs refrained from commenting directly.
Gibbs said that the US government is not in the position of choosing between the 2 sides in Egypt, but it is for the people of Egypt to determine.
