US ships ready for evacuation from Egypt
As anti-government protests continue to rage in Egypt, 1,000 Marines aboard 2 US Navy ships are preparing to evacuate American citizens.
The Marines are specially trained to rescue US citizens in foreign countries during emergencies.
The US military says that the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge and transport ship USS Ponce are on alert in the southern Red Sea.
The Marines are there to evacuate Americans in Egypt with helicopters if the US embassy requests their assistance.
They are still at the preparation stage and have not started evacuation operations.
In Washington, senior US officials are meeting to determine ways to cope with the civil unrest in Egypt.
If the situation deteriorates further, it may greatly affect US Middle East policy and the peace process.
