Smartphone carriers add 3D features to compete
Mobile phone companies are seeking to attract new customers by launching smartphones with upgraded features, including handsets with 3D capability.
Japan's largest mobile phone carrier, NTT Docomo, on Monday announced 4 types of smartphone that will be available from next month.
One of them has a liquid crystal display that enables 3D viewing without special glasses. 3-dimensional movies and game software will be provided by NTT Docomo. The phone also allows users to shoot 3D photos and see them on the spot.
NTT Docomo President Ryuji Yamada said the company is broadening its target market. He stressed that winning the race to sell smartphones now depends on how well Docomo can provide services that are both fun and easy to use.
Another major carrier, Softbank, announced last week that it would start selling a smartphone next month that lets users play games and watch videos in 3D without glasses.
Sales of conventional mobile phones are leveling off, but the smartphone market continues to expand, especially among young users.
