Japan bodies to assist in nuclear accidents abroad
Japanese institutions have been registered at the International Atomic Energy Agency to provide assistance to other countries in case of nuclear accidents.
With more and more countries turning to nuclear energy, the UN agency has been building a network of institutions to prepare for possible accidents. The bodies need to be able to measure radiation and treat people exposed to it.
On Friday, Hiroshima University, the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in Chiba Prefecture, and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency in Ibaraki Prefecture were added to the IAEA's list.
The 3 institutions have conducted surveys on the damage caused by the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima. T
hey also treated the victims of the 1999 accident at a uranium reprocessing plant in the village of Tokai in Ibaraki prefecture.
The institutions will use their experience to advise countries in case of nuclear accidents and send workers to accident sites if necessary.
The Japan Atomic Energy Agency says Japan's knowledge and efforts in these fields are among the world's best and should be used to limit damage in case of nuclear accidents outside Japan.
