Some 5,000 dead birds fall from sky in US
Officials in the southern US state of Arkansas are trying to determine what caused thousands of dead birds to fall from the sky on New Year's Eve.
The officials say they received calls from residents of Beebe City on Friday night reporting falling birds.
Roads and backyards were littered with nearly 5,000 red-winged blackbirds, most of them dead. Many of the birds had acute physical trauma injuries.
The state officials say the flock could have taken off in such a frenzy that they grew disoriented and crashed into buildings and each other in the darkness, then fell to the ground and died.
The officials are also looking into a possible link with booming noises from fireworks that exploded in the vicinity.
The previous day, tens of thousands of fish were found dead in a river about 160 kilometers from Beebe.
