Surau committee goes to court to stop demolition
KUALA LUMPUR: The management committee of a surau here today initiated legal action against the Federal Land Commissioner and Kuala Lumpur City (DBKL) to prevent their officers from demolishing their surau.
Taman Setiawangsa's Surau An-Nur's management committee filed the action through the law firm of Boestamam Ahmad & Co at the High Court (Special Powers and Appelate Division) registry here and named the commissioner as the first defendant and DBKL the second.
The committee wants the surau site to be left alone or an alternative site of the same size (8,000 square feet) to be provided to it.
The committee is also seeking a declaration that any attempt by the two entities to carry out any type of demolishing work at the surau is illegal.
The committee's chairman and also the surau's imam, Mohd Yusof Wazir, who was present during the filing of the court action, told the media that the surau was over 20 years old and catered for a congregation of over 100 people.
