Thailand-Cambodia border clashes resume
Tensions are running high around a disputed area on the Thailand-Cambodia border. Clashes between troops from the two countries resumed on Sunday night even though the 2 militaries had agreed a ceasefire on Saturday.
The dispute began 3 years ago when ancient temple Preah Vihear was listed as a World Heritage Site in Cambodia. The temple is in a disputed area.
Thai and Cambodian troops fought a fierce battle from Friday to Saturday. The two governments said at least 5 people were killed and 20 or more people were injured.
They had agreed a ceasefire on Saturday, but new clashes took place on Sunday night. The Thai government says many people were injured.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen asked the UN Security Council to hold an emergency session.
After some Thai hardliners were arrested allegedly for illegally entering Cambodia late last year, demonstrators in Thailand demanded the government take a firm stance against Cambodia.
The Preah Vihear temple has been badly damaged by gunfire. There are concerns that damage will worsen if clashes continue.
