Japan's fast breeder nuclear reactor Monju has resumed operation after a suspension of more than 14 years. The prototype reactor in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture was activated at 10:36 AM on Thursday when an engineer removed control rods that prevent nuclear fission. Safety inspectors from the industry ministry were present in the central control room when engineers with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency began preparatory work for the reactor to resume operation shortly before 10:00 AM.
If the resumption goes well Monju is expected to reach criticality, achieving a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction on Saturday. The agency says it is planning to raise output in increments, paying attention to safety, and spend 3 years to complete the present test run, before putting the reactor into a full operation.
The reactor had been shut down since a sodium leak from its coolant system caused a fire in December 1995. It was resumed after a shutdown of 14 years and 5 months, following last month's approval by the Fukui governor. fast-breeder reactor generates electricity by burning plutonium extracted from spent nuclear fuel, while turning unburned uranium in the reactor core into plutonium. But the long shutdown has raised concern over safety and some have criticized the huge budget allocated to the reactor program despite its uncertain future.
