Mubarak says he won't resign
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has made clear he has no intention of resigning despite the massive anti-government protests, saying any violent act that disrupts social order cannot be tolerated.
Mubarak was speaking on state television on Saturday.
The Egyptian president expressed regret over the deaths caused by clashes between security troops and demonstrators.
He said it is understandable that the demonstrations seek the eradication of poverty and corruption.
But he criticized protesters for arson and other violent acts, saying they crossed a fine line between freedom and chaos.
Mubarak also said he will stay on as president and will take new steps to tackle poverty and unemployment.
He added that he will dismiss his Cabinet on Saturday to form a new government.
But in the capital, Cairo, even after Mubarak's speech, the situation remains unstable with demonstrations demanding his overthrow continuing.
