Magnitude 7.7 quake hits off Sumatra
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 has struck off Indonesia's Sumatra Island.
The US Geological Survey says the quake occurred at 9:42 PM local time, 14:42 UTC on Monday.
It estimates that the quake's focus was about 280 kilometers south of Sumatra's central city Padang, with a depth of 20.6 kilometers below sea level.
Initially, the USGS announced the magnitude was 7.5.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii says a 65-centimeter tsunami was observed in Padang one hour after the quake.
Indonesian authorities say no damage or casualties have been reported so far.
The powerful earthquake was followed by a magnitude 6.1 quake, which occurred near the focus of the first one off Sumatra at around 2:37 AM local time Tuesday.
The tsunami warning center in Hawaii says minor tsunamis are likely.
