Japanese lifespan continues to set world record

Life expectancies for Japanese hit a record high in 2009 for the 4th year in a row, with women ranked top in the world and men in 5th place.

Japan's health ministry said on Monday that the average life-span for Japanese women was 86.44 last year, an increase of 0.39 years from 2008, while that for men was 79.59, 0.3 of a year longer.

Japan's average life spans for both men and women have been rising since 2000, with the exception of 2005, when a seasonal flu outbreak dropped the figures.

The ministry attributes the rise to advanced medical treatments for the 3 major causes of death --- cancer, heart disease and stroke, as well as fewer deaths from pneumonia and other illnesses.
